OSAKA, Japan — In a major announcement that has theme park fans and Pokémon Trainers buzzing worldwide, Universal Studios Japan (USJ) and The Pokémon Company revealed plans today for a massive new Universal Studios Japan Pokémon collaboration. The project promises to deliver “innovative, immersive, and world-class” Pokémon experiences, marking a significant evolution in the partnership between the two entertainment giants.
This bold new global project will make its debut at Universal Studios Japan before expanding to other Universal Destinations & Experiences locations around the world.
A “New Dimension” of Theme Park Entertainment
While specific details on the attractions remain under wraps, the announcement emphasizes that this project will go far beyond the parades and stage shows currently seen at the park.
Tak Murayama, Executive Vice President & General Manager of USJ LLC, hinted at the scale of the endeavor. “A bold new global project is set to begin at Universal Studios Japan, creating unprecedented and innovative experiences,” Murayama said. “We are proud to launch this journey from Japan… delivering extraordinary moments filled with surprise and excitement that will far exceed our guests’ expectations.”
The timing is intentional. 2026 marks the 30th Anniversary of Pokémon, a franchise that began in Japan in 1996 and has since become a global cultural phenomenon.
“As Pokémon celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, we are thrilled to launch this new project at such a significant milestone,” said Tsunekazu Ishihara, President and CEO of The Pokémon Company. “Our mission is to enrich both the real and virtual worlds through Pokémon, and with this project, we aim to create theme park entertainment that surprises and delights fans around the globe.”

From Parades to Permanent Immersion
Universal Studios Japan began integrating Pokémon into its park lineup in October 2021. Until now, these appearances have been limited to seasonal offerings and entertainment, such as the popular NO LIMIT! Parade and Halloween-themed shows.
This new announcement suggests a transition toward more permanent, physical infrastructure—potentially similar to the highly successful SUPER NINTENDO WORLD areas. Mark Woodbury, Chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, noted that the project is part of a strategy to bring “fan-first, trip-driving characters” to the parks in new ways.
“Collaborating with imaginative and inventive storytellers fuels our ability to create and deliver mind-blowing attractions,” said Woodbury. “We will continue bringing [Pokémon’s] vibrant world to life in new and innovative ways for years to come.”
Global Expansion Confirmed
Perhaps the most exciting news for international fans is the confirmation that this project is not exclusive to Japan. While USJ will be the first to host the new experience, Universal confirmed today that they will “deliver unique Pokémon experiences across the company’s global footprint” following the Japanese debut.
This could mean future Pokémon lands or rides at Universal Orlando Resort (where Epic Universe is currently under construction) or Universal Studios Hollywood.

What’s Next?
No opening date or specific ride details were provided in the January 22 release. However, with the 30th Anniversary celebrations kicking off this year, industry insiders expect more teasers and concept art to drop in the coming months.
For now, fans can rest assured that the world of Pokémon is about to get much more real.
